On the authority of Abu Saeed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say, “Whoever of you sees an evil must then change it with his hand. If he is not able to do so, then [he must change it ] with his tongue. And if he is not able to do so, then [he must change it] with his heart. And that is the slightest [effect of] faith.” (Recorded in Muslim)
1- Islam does not condone the killing of innocent people.
2- Anyone who kills indiscriminately is outside the religion of Islam.
3- The media is reporting that these groups or individuals are acting extreme because of Islam. This is not true, because you cannot find anywhere in the teaching of Islam that supports their actions. You cannot find anything in the history of Islam that supports their actions.
4- The group (Isis and others) that you are hearing about in the news is a very small percentage of people who say that they are Muslims. There are over 1.6 Billion Muslims in the world, that’s 23% of the world’s population. Islam is the second largest religion in the world and it's followers are law abiding citizen wherever they live. These groups that are committing atrocities say that they’re actions are in the name of Islam but it is not in the name of Islam, because Islam does not support beheading and kidnapping.
5- A good example to compare what these extreme groups are doing is to compare it with what most of you can relate to, and that is the history of America. The KKK (Klu Klux Klan), The KKK called for the purification of the American society. They terrorize the south by lynching, cutting off heads, cutting off private parts, they would even cut unborn babies out of the stomachs of their mothers while proclaiming to be upright Christians. When they murdered and killed they said they were doing it in the name of Jesus. What did they leave in the yards of people that they were terrorizing, the symbol of Christianity, a cross. Most times it was a burning cross. Can we say that the KKK are representatives of Christianity or Christ, of course not.
Let’s take a look at another evil government backed system that took place in American to show how people can proclaim to do things in the name of God and religion that the religion does not support. Slavery!!! Over 400 years of oppression, perpetrated by who? People who said that they were Christians, they went to church every Sunday, they read the Lord’s prayer, they taught the Bible to their slaves, and they proclaim to be following of Christ while they were murdering, brutalizing, whipping, lynching, and having their way with the female slaves. Nothing in the annals of history can compare with this crime that was committed under the law and by Christians. Can we honestly say that those generations of Christians who supported and commited this crime were following the teaching of Christ, of course not.
6- There are people in all faiths who have interpreted scripture to fit their own desires and agendas. Unfortunately, it only takes a small number of ignorant people to make it hard on the majority of people.
7- Muslims do not define what Islam Is. The Quran that Almighty God reveled to Prophet Muhammad PBUH defines what Islam is. The life that Prophet Muhammad PBUH lived shows us and the world how Islam should be practiced.
{God says in the Quran; And We have not sent you forth but as a mercy to mankind.} (Al-Anbiya’ 21:107)
The Prophet once said: "A true believer is one with whom others feel secure." (Al-Bukhari) He did not take revenge on people or the wrong doer.
Before engaging in battle, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) would instruct his soldiers:
1. “Do not kill any child, any woman, or any elder or sick person.” (Sunan Abu Dawud)
2.“Do not practice treachery or mutilation.(Al-Muwatta)
3. Do not uproot or burn palms or cut down fruitful trees.(Al-Muwatta)
4. Do not slaughter a sheep or a cow or a camel, except for food.” (Al-Muwatta)
5. “If one fights his brother, [he must] avoid striking the face, for God created him in the image of Adam.” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
6. “Do not kill the monks in monasteries, and do not kill those sitting in places of worship. (Musnad Ahmad Ibn Hanbal)
7. “Do not destroy the villages and towns, do not spoil the cultivated fields and gardens, and do not slaughter the cattle.” (Sahih Bukhari; Sunan Abu Dawud)
8. “Do not wish for an encounter with the enemy; pray to God to grant you security; but when you [are forced to] encounter them, exercise patience.” (Sahih Muslim)
9. “No one may punish with fire except the Lord of Fire.” (Sunan Abu Dawud).
10. “Accustom yourselves to do good if people do good, and to not do wrong even if they commit evil.” (Al-Tirmidhi)
